How can I transfer or register a domain name?

Golemweb recommends the use of Golemweb services for domain registration/transfer. You can transfer your domain by visiting www.golemweb.com (or the web site where you register your domain names) or you can have Golemweb transfer your domain.  If you opt to transfer yourself, you will need the following information:

Golemweb's Technical Contact: TP8285
Primary Server Hostname: NS1.GOLEMWEB.COM
Primary Server address: 63.227.68.14
Secondary Server Hostname: NS1.USWEST.NET
Secondary Server address: 204.147.80.5

If you are registering your domain for the first time, you can use the same process described above.

When will I know that my domain is approved & active?

You will receive confirmation of the order via email from Golemweb after a domain registration or transfer.  After email confirmation, it can take anywhere from 2-7 days before the domain becomes active or changes take effect.

How do I check on the availability of a domain name?

See www.golemweb.com to check on domain name availability or purchasing a domain name.  There are many additional sources for checking availability and purchasing.

Can I change my domain name?

A domain name cannot be "changed". In order to change a domain name, you must register and pay for a new domain name.  This will have no affect on your original domain name.

-How long does it take to transfer a domain name?

The process of filling out the form to transfer a domain name is quick and easy.  The entire process of domain transfer (zone updates plus Internet propagation) usually takes between 3 and 7 days.

How do I upload my files on the Web Server?

You will need FTP Software to upload your files to our server.  Popular FTP Software includes "WS_FTP Pro" and "Cute FTP" can be found at http://www.download.com/.

What FTP Software do you suggest?

We do not recommend a specific FTP application for use.  You can review some of the more popular packages at http://www.download.com/.

What name should I use for my "homepage" to get it to load automatically?

default.htm is the default name for a "homepage".  You can also use index.htm, index.html, or default.asp.

What can my file names be?

File names can be any name up to 254 characters in length (including spaces).  Special symbols are not allowed. We recommend using all lower case with no spaces in your file names.

How do I create sub-directories within my Website?

You can create specific sub-directories using FTP programs.  All accounts come with the necessary permissions to create and remove subdirectories.

Can Golemweb still host my web site if another company is hosting my domain name?

Golemweb recommends that our customers use our hosting services for e-mail, web, and domain if all three services will be used. However, if you have some obligation to another hosting company or you do not choose to use our domain hosting for other reasons, we still can host your web site. In this case, it is important that whoever is hosting your domain point your DNS records for your web site to our web server.

Who can move my web site files to Golemweb's  Web Server if I transfer my domain?

You, your Web Developer, or we can transfer all of your files.

Where do I register with search engines?

Most search engine sites allow web site registration on their web sites.  There are also numerous Search Engine Submittal sites available on the Internet. We can register your site for you for a nominal fee.  You can use our sign-up form to purchase that feature.

What software are your web servers running?

We run a variety of server software. Our servers are running Windows NT 4.0.

How do I Find out more about using Microsoft Front Page?

See http://support.microsoft.com/support/frontpage/fp2000/fp2kfaq.asp (official Microsoft site).

What is a Secure Web Server and How Do I Secure My Web Site Transactions?

A Secure Server allows secure online transactions.  Selling merchandise online or processing payments via credit card are types of transactions that require a Secure Server.  You will need to make a request to Golemweb for a Secure Transactions Account. This typically costs an additional $10/month.

May I have two or more domain names point at the same web site?

Yes.  Many customers will order yourname.com along with yourname.org and yourname.net.  You can then point all of the web sites to yourname.com and just maintain the one web site.  In order to point these domain names, you will need to contact Golemweb Technical Assistance Center or e-mail support@golemweb.com  to make the changes.

How do I find the IP address of my site?

We incorporate virtual hosting for our web sites.  You do not have a unique IP address for your web site.  You can find out which shared IP your domain is using by using the PING command (from a Windows computer).  Go to a MS DOS Prompt/Command Prompt and type:

ping www.yourdomain.com (where yourdomain is your domain name).  Click “Enter”.  You’ll then see the IP address of the web server.
